川井の作品は美しい時間に彩られ、同時に一編の物語が立ち現れる。
かつての絵画表現は、物語の再現に仕える技法であった。人々が崇めた精霊、聖者の奇跡、歴史的英雄の活躍。いわば絵画の歴史とは再現の歴史であり、時として画家の表現は再現を超えて世界の景色を刷新してきた。
しかし、近代以降、芸術は個人の生の表現へと移行し、物語の再現は映画や小説にその座を譲りつつある。そこでの川井の試みは、この物語と絵画の希薄化しつつある関係に再び働きかけることである。神々や信仰が日常を離れた現在、川井は自らのイマジネーションによって語りのモチーフを補完する。
「人間とは矛盾、ないしは答えの出ない問題を抱えながら生きている。それに対し、オリジナルのヒーローを創造することで、戦いへの欲求、それに相反する平和への慈しみを持つ人間のユーモラスな姿を追求したい」と、川井は言う。
そこで生まれる作品は即ち、彼が変身、ロボット、魔法を扱うヒーローに与える自由で無垢な美的価値の結晶である。こうして仕上がるのは常に活字のない挿絵であり、古典を踏襲しつつも現代の物語を語りかけるものである。
A beautiful passage of time is represented through Kawai’s works which manifests a story to tell.
Traditionally, pictorial expression served as a method to reproduce a certain story, such as souls people used to worship, miracles of the holy, historical roles in war, etc. In other words, the history of pictorial expression is history of reproduction, although sometimes the painter captured and expressed something more than a mimesis and renewed our vision of the world we live.
However, after the modern period, art expression has shifted its theme to personal lives and the role of story telling is gradually passed over to literatures and films. Upon this, Kawai approaches to work on the now fragile bond between story and picture to bring the two into reunion. Since gods and faith are less related to our modern society, Kawai complements the theme with his own imagination. “Human beings live their life carrying this kind of contradiction or unanswerable problems. By creating an original hero, I want to pursue the amusing trait of a mankind who exists with the desire to battle, and yet have contradictory behaviors,” says Kawai. This leads to his work to be an innocent and free crystallization of aesthetic values, represented through transformation, robots and magic.
Thus, Kawai’s painting is always an illustration without chapters with classical technique portraying a story of modern lives.
