「猫礼賛」
西洋絵画の中でも、キリスト教やギリシャ神話等、物語を内包する題材に惹かれます。特に近年は、初期ルネサンスのキリスト教美術の役目であった当時文字の読めない信者たちに、聖書に書かれていることを一目で問答無用に伝える為の様々な工夫に着目しています。
私の実家では私が生まれる前から猫を飼っていて、１匹目とのお別れは中学生の時で、その後すぐに2 匹目を保護し、その2 匹目が天寿を全うしたのが私が36 歳の時と2 匹とも長生きで、私の人生の多感な時期に濃密に猫と関わりを持ち、様々な思い出があります。
作品のモチーフを選ぶ際に、言語化の難しい、心が強く動く感覚を大事にしたいと思っており、私にとって猫はその様なモチーフです。猫を愛する人々同士は、猫好き特有の強い共感があると思います。
近年、思想や人種等の違いによる分断が加速していますが、猫を愛する等身近な事に対する共感こそが、近年の分断の加速に対抗しうる可能性を秘めていると感じています。
猫という人類共通の友人を通して、平和への一歩を伝えたいと思います。

“Ode to Cats”
Even within Western painting, I am particularly drawn to subjects that contain narratives, such as those from Christian stories or Greek mythology. In recent years, I have been especially interested in the various methods used in early Renaissance Christian art to convey the contents of the Bible at a glance, without question, to believers who could not read at the time.
My family has kept cats even before I was born. I said goodbye to my first cat when I was in junior high, and soon after, we rescued a second cat. That second cat lived until I was 36 years old. Both cats lived long lives, and during the formative periods of my life, I had an intense relationship with them, creating many memories.
When selecting motifs for my work, I want to prioritize sensations that are difficult to put into words—those that move the heart strongly. For me, cats are such a motif. I believe that people who love cats share a unique and strong sense of empathy that is characteristic
of cat lovers.
In recent years, divisions based on ideology, race, and other differences have been accelerating.
I feel that empathy toward something close to us, like the love of cats, holds the potential to counteract this accelerating division. Through cats, humanity’ s common friends, I hope to convey a step toward peace.
